Not all iron ore is created equal. The highest quality and most important iron ores for steelmaking are hematite (Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4). Hematite is the more sought-after ore and the preferred raw material in efficient steelmaking mills.
Iron ore fines are small particles of iron ore that result from the crushing and screening of larger iron ore rocks. Iron ore fines are typically less than 6.3 mm in size. They generally have a lower iron content compared to iron ore concentrates, often ranging from 56% and 63% Iron.
They are used in steelmaking process, often after undergoing beneficiation to increase their iron content.
Iron ore lumps are larger pieces of iron ore, typically ranging from 7 to 25 millimeters in size. Iron ore lumps can be directly used in blast furnaces without the need for sintering, which is a process required for fines. Though more desirable due to higher iron content and direct usability, lumps often command a premium price over fines.
